California Legislators Block Facial Acknowledgment Bill Amidst Protests Against Racist Policing

California legislators obstructed a bill on Wednesday that could have broadened using facial acknowledgment technology by companies and federal government, consisting of law enforcement, as protesters across the country continued to call out bigotry and unjust policing.

The legislation, Assembly Costs 2261, was held in committee, implying it didn’t garner sufficient votes to move forward in the legal process.

California Assemblymember Ed Chau, who introduced the costs, composed in a CalMatters opinion post that it was suggested to “manage using facial recognition innovation by industrial, state and local public entities.”

But dozens of civil liberties groups opposed it, calling the costs an “ endorsement of intrusive security” in an April letter, including: “We should not be offering companies and federal governments a thumbs-up to utilize facial recognition to track individuals … and even more marginalize neighborhoods.”

The American Civil Liberties Union noted the expense would “allow companies to offer face acknowledgment innovation to law enforcement even when they know their tech to be flawed and racially prejudiced.”

” While AB 2261 professes to secure personal privacy, it does the opposite,” the ACLU wrote on its website. “The costs invites tech business and police to self-regulate their usage of face recognition, and places no meaningful limitations on their ability to release this invasive technology against individuals of California.”
