WASHINGTON– With 2 weeks till extra unemployment advantages expire, Congress stays at a standstill on another coronavirus plan– and the odds of lawmakers reaching a deal prior to people begin missing payments are seeming significantly long.
Despite some new agreement that the extra $600 in federal unemployment benefits should not vanish totally, Republicans and Democrats are still far apart on a real offer. Republicans are taking a look at a number better to $200, and Democrats are promoting benefits closer to $500
The benefits end on July 31, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) stated Monday that senators won’t start working out in earnest till next week, when lawmakers go back to the Capitol from recess. McConnell’s top priority for the legislation is protecting schools and organisations from coronavirus-related claims— an idea Democratic leaders strongly oppose.
The timing all but ensures that even if Congress consents to preserve benefits, it won’t do so rapidly adequate to avoid a lapse in the higher payments.
