Fauci Suggests Requirement For National Lockdown As More States Issue Stay-At-Home Orders

As more U.S. specifies concern stay-at-home orders and the federal government recommends a 30- day period of social distancing, Dr. Anthony Fauci on Thursday suggested the requirement for a national lockdown, while acknowledging he does not have the authority to order one.

Almost 40 U.S. states now have some type of a stay-at-home executive order, mandating the closure of nonessential services and motivating citizens to remain inside unless definitely necessary. They can differ extremely from state to state, like excusing certain companies and gatherings or making the orders just for specific counties rather than statewide, and they have varying degrees of enforceability.

NBC “Today” program host Savannah Guthrie asked Fauci in a Thursday interview if a nationwide lockdown would be more effective “than this hodgepodge, piecemeal method.” Fauci, the nation’s top contagious diseases main and a significant component in the U.S. coronavirus reaction, agreed.

But he noted that states still have significant freedom “to make their own choice” in this circumstance and questioned some of the stay-at-home exemptions they’re allowing.
