Police then fired a single shot, critically injuring the man.

The Queensland Ambulance Service said he was shot in the abdomen and was rushed to Princess Alexandra Hospital in a life-threatening condition.

Kitto said on Sunday the man was in a stable but critical condition in hospital under police guard.

Police will speak with him once he has recovered.

The man is known to police.

Kitto described the incident as “tragic” and “a shock”.

“Obviously it’s not something that we hope to turn up to work and be confronted with,” he said.

“At this point in time, our primary concern or our priority is looking after our officers that were involved.”

A crime scene has been established and investigations are ongoing.
