(Warning: This post consists of spoilers for Tuesday’s “This Is Us.”).
Election Day put a two-week-long pin in “This Is United States” fans’ plans to discover what happened to Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) biological mother, Laurel (Jennifer Holmes), after the Season 5 best exposed she did not really pass away in childbirth as viewers– and the Pearson family– thought. With Tuesday’s return of the NBC household drama, we got an itty bitty piece of the puzzle through the introduction of 2 brand-new characters.
Tonight’s episode, “Modifications,” opens on a scene of an older Vietnamese male (played by Vien Hong) and his young granddaughter (Brandilyn Cheah) fishing. We return to these two unnamed characters twice more in the hour, first to see the man in his kitchen preparing the fish he and his grandchild captured, informing her how he discovered to prepare since he wished to “impress someone very unique” to him. When she asks who it was he wanted to impress, he does not respond to, simply teasing her for asking many questions.

” I will not tell you who I prepare for, however I will demonstrate how I cook for her,” he says, making the little girl really excited to find out he’s speaking about a “her.”.
We revisit the two again at the end of the episode, when the fish is done, and the granddaughter asks her grandad to inform her if the lady he has been referring to is the one she sees in “all the pictures” around his home. That woman, if you couldn’t tell right away, is Randall’s biological mother, Laurel.

Now, we have definitely no idea who this man is and how he is connected to Laurel– or at what moment this specific story with his granddaughter is taking place– but “This Is Us” developer Dan Fogelman informed press reporters after the Season 5 best we would be getting answers about Laurel’s story quickly.
” There’s obviously a story to inform continuing onward from that moment,” he said, describing the bombshell cliffhanger that revealed Laurel being conserved by paramedics from what Randall’s daddy, William, had actually constantly thought was a deadly, post-childbirth overdose of heroin. That presumption was the factor William did never go back to their house after he took child Randall to offer him away for adoption when he thought Laurel was dead and the paramedics were going to call social services to take Randall anyways.
Without ruining too much, I think well within the first half of our season. And certainly, it’s not something that we’re going to drag out a mystery over multiple seasons or anything.

While Fogelman assures there will “certainly” be answers to the questions about whether Randall’s biological mother lives in today day and what occurred after she was restored from her overdose, the NBC family drama’s manager says the season will likewise reveal who this lady was “well before this minute, well prior to she fulfilled William.”.
” This lady who was Randall’s birth mother and hasn’t played a prominent part in our story thus far. That’s a huge part of Randall’s journey in the front half of the season.”.
