President Donald Trump advised governors to enforce “strong punishment” on anyone who participates in flag-burning, an act of protest secured by the First Modification.
Trump’s comments in a Monday conference call with the governors followed a weekend of nationwide civil rights demonstrations stimulated by the killing of an unarmed Black male, George Floyd, while in the custody of Minneapolis policeman. The presentations were mostly peaceful, incidents of violence and robbery occurred, particularly after dark.
As videos went viral of the chaos– that included violent arrests and clashes in between authorities and protesters– Trump in the call encouraged the guvs to get harder. He scolded most of them as being “weak” in their reaction so far, and threatened to release the military if they do not start to “dominate.”
