A bipartisan group of House members presented a costs Tuesday that would reverse a proposed 2.8% Medicare Physician Fee Schedule payment cut and provide doctors a raise equivalent to half of the boost in the Medicare Economic Index (MEI), a step of health care inflation.
“America’s doctors are at a snapping point and access to premium, inexpensive care is at danger for countless Medicare clients,” Rep. Greg Murphy, MD (R-N.C.), among the costs’s co-sponsors, stated in a declaration. “When a doctor sees a Medicare client, they do so out of the goodness of their heart, not due to the fact that it makes monetary sense … Unfortunately, compensations continue to decrease, putting enormous pressure on physicians to retire, close their practices, give up seeing brand-new Medicare clients, or look for a less effective work position. This bipartisan legislation would stop yet another year of repayment cuts, provide a small inflationary modification, and secure Medicare for doctors and clients alike.”
Rep. Jimmy Panetta (D-Calif.), another expense co-sponsor, kept in mind that “Medicare payments to doctors are simply not equaling our financial truths and the expense of care.”
