Seeing a baby become a star and then a legend is a unique experience. I feel rather like a fond family member as I set off to attend the 25th edition of the
ET Awards for Corporate Excellence
in Mumbai today, after a gap of many years. As part of the team that put together the very first awards ceremony half a lifetime ago, I am excited by the promise of a refreshing new twist to the event. Adding an element of mystery and surprise to the OG of corporate awards is a big ask, after all!
When the ET Awards debuted, it was the pioneer in its sphere. It was, to us at least, a no-brainer: who else but India’s largest business newspaper could (and should) initiate the formal recognition of India’s industrial, corporate and entrepreneurial talent? That it set off a trend to honour this part of national life acknowledges that ET had correctly gauged the zeitgeist of an energised India on the cusp of a new millennium.
I can’t help but think that much like our armed forces marching down Kartavya Path on Republic Day or sports people winning medals or scientists pulling off a rocket launch evoke a feeling of immense pride, the women and men honoured with the ET Awards every year epitomise the great strides India is making in business and industry, propelling the economy to unprecedented heights. India was waiting for just such an event, to elicit pride in our growth story too.
