How is Holika Dahan done?

Holika Dahan is performed on the evening of Phalgun Purnima and is considered a symbol of the victory of good over evil. Its story is related to Prahlad and Holika. On this day, Holika is decorated with wood and cakes in the open space. During the auspicious time, people worship by offering Roli, rice, flowers, coconut and new crop, then wrap yarn around Holika and circumambulate it. After this the fire is lit and wheat or gram is offered. It is believed that this removes negative energy and brings happiness and prosperity in the house.

Story of Holika Dahan

The story of Holika Dahan is related to devotee Prahlad and demon king Hiranyakashyap. According to mythological belief, Hiranyakashipu considered himself a god and wanted everyone to worship him, but his son Prahlad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Angered by this, he tried to kill Prahlad several times, but every time he was saved. Finally Hiranyakashyap took the help of his sister Holika, who had the boon of not getting burnt by fire. Holika sat in the fire with Prahlad in her lap, but by the grace of Lord Vishnu, Prahlad was saved safely and Holika was burnt to ashes. Holika Dahan is done every year in memory of this incident, which symbolizes the victory of good over evil.
