Galveston County’s local health authority states the county has seen a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases in current weeks and strongly prompted locals and visitors to use masks in public and practice social distancing to avoid more spread of the new coronavirus.
” We are at a point now where it’s a critical juncture,” said Dr. Philip Keiser, the regional health authority. “If we don’t begin seeing modifications in habits, we can expect to see the numbers continue to rise and we can expect to see the pressure on the medical facilities increasing significantly.
Of the 1,378 positive COVID-19 cases in Galveston, more than one third have actually been reported since June 1, according to a news release from the Galveston County Health District. Keiser attributed the uptick to individuals not using masks in public or correctly social distancing.
