Redskins to retire controversial name after evaluation

In a statement, the team stated it would “be retiring the Redskins name and logo upon conclusion of an evaluation” demanded by its sponsors.

The Washington DC-based group has dealt with years of pressure over a name seen as offending to Native Americans.

Team owner Dan Snyder had been a boyhood fan of the 87- year-old group – which was called the Redskins in 1933 when it was still based in Boston – and had vowed to never change its moniker.

Last week, Amazon, Walmart and Target, Nike and other retail stores removed group merchandise from their websites. ESPN also said it would stop utilizing the group logo, which portrays a Native American man.
