Cyclone Sitrang: Coast Guard saves 20 Bangladeshi anglers caught mid-sea

The Indian Coast Guard on Tuesday saved 20 Bangladeshi anglers who were stranded after their fishing boat capsized when Cyclone Sitrang made landfall.

By Manjeet Negi: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Tuesday saved 20 Bangladeshi anglers near the Indo-Bangladesh Maritime Border Line. Their boats had actually capsized and were left stranded mid-sea as Cyclone Sitrang made landfall.

The Coast Guard’s Dornier airplane was on a search operation to render support to mariners who may have been impacted by the passage of the cyclone when it discovered 20 anglers in the water.

The survivors were clinging onto drifts and particles from sunken fishing boat. Coast Guard airplane dropped liferaft in the area and stayed in the location till survivors started the liferaft.

Additionally, the airplane diverted merchant vessel Nanta Bhum to get 20 anglers sticking onto life mid-sea. Afterwards, ICG carried out 2 more air sorties to sanitise the whole location impacted throughout the passage of cyclone, to dismiss any more events in the location.

Coast Guard ships Vijaya, Varad, and C-426 were diverted to enhance search and rescue efforts and sanitise the location. The 20 Bangladeshi anglers were consequently required to coast by the Coast Guard ship Vijaya.

The anglers were examined by a medical officer onboard the ICG ship. They will be turned over to the Bangladesh Coast Guard in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in between Indian Coast Guard and Bangladesh Coast Guard.
