The trio of Netflix, Noah Baumbach, and Adam Driver are back again for a new movie. But unlike their previous project, 2019’s Marriage Story, this will be a black comedy titled White Noise, based on Don DeLillo’s novel of the same name.
The movie centers on the life of Prof. Jack Gladney, played by Driver, and his wife Babette (Gerwig), as they struggle with their family life after a nearby chemical spill pollutes the surrounding air. As you can guess by now, it has all the hallmarks of a disaster movie, but with a Baumbach twist.
What’s interesting is, that Don DeLillo’s 1985 novel was considered to be “unfilmable” for many decades, due to the abstract nature of the novel, dealing with the philosophical themes woven through the characters and story. Credited as the writer and director, it now remains to be seen what exactly Baumbach delivers us.
Fortunately, we may not have to wait that long to gauge the initial reactions. Also starring Raffey Cassidy, André Benjamin, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Don Cheadle, White Noise will open at both the Venice Film Festival, at the end of August and the New York Film Festival in October.
