The BrahMos missile that India and Russia have created together are one of the most powerful supersonic cruise missiles in the world today. Recently, during Operation Sindoor (9-10 May 2025), India used it against Pakistan. In this operation, 15 BrahMos missiles destroyed 11 aerial status of Pakistan, which weakened its aerial strength.

Let’s know about those 5 features of BrahMos, which made it ‘Brahmastra’.

1. Three times faster speed (supersonic speed)

The BrahMos missile blows 2.8 to 3 times faster at the speed of sound, ie Mach 3 speed. This means that it moves from a speed of 900 meters per second to the target. Due to this speed, there is no time to react to the enemy. In Operation Sindoor, BrahMos destroyed Pakistan’s aerial status in less than 10 seconds, such as Bholari and Noor Khan Airbase.

2. Long distance hit (range 450-800 km)

Earlier, the range of BrahMos was 290 kilometers, but now it has been increased from 450 to 800 kilometers. This means that India can attack deep locations of the enemy from its border itself. BrahMos missiles launched from Sukhoi-30 MKI aircraft at Operation Sindoor targeted bases like Rawalpindi, Bholari and Sargodha in Pakistan without crossing the border.

3. Accurate target

The biggest feature of BrahMos is its accuracy. It hits the target with 1 meter circular error probability (CEP), that is, it attacks the right place. In the operation, it accurately destroyed the radar system, command centers and airports of Pakistan, such as radar sites of Pasarur and Sialkot. This did not cause collateral damage (harm to the surrounding things).

4. Radar ability to avoid (low-altitude flight)

The BrahMos missile can fly at a very low height of 3 to 10 meters, so that the enemy’s radars do not catch it. Also, it can change the way in the air. Can dive down fast. Aerial defense systems like HQ-9 of Pakistan in Operation Sindoor could not stop it, as it reached the target while escaping from the radar.

5. ‘Fire and Forgate’ system

BrahMos is a ‘fire and forgate’ missile, that is, no more help is required after launching it. It goes to the target itself. It has an advanced guidance system (incentive, satellite and radar), which protects it from jamming (electronic intervention). In the operation, it destroyed several targets together, such as an AWACS aircraft in Bholari and several runways.

BrahMos strength in Operation Sindoor

Operation Sindoor was the response to the terrorist attack in Pahalgam on 22 April 2025, in which 26 people were killed. India attacked in response to 9-10 May. BrahMos destroyed 11 air conditions in Pakistan, including Bholari, Rafiki, Noor Khan and Sargodha. An AWACS aircraft of Pakistan and many UAVs were also destroyed in this attack. Pakistan’s air defense system proved to be useless, and was forced to ceasefire.
