WASHINGTON: It will be a race between former vice-president Joe Biden and Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders for the Democratic nomination to challenge Republican Donald Trump in the November 2020 Presidential elections.
A resurgent Biden put behind early primary losses in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada, to win a raft of southern states including Texas to reignite his campaign on Super Tuesday, so called because inner-party polls on this day allocate 1,357 of the 3,979 pledged delegates to the Democratic National Convention.
Sanders remained in the fray by winning California, his home state Vermont, and two other states, with a rough count showing he bagged 330 delegates to Biden’s 390 on the night. Elizabeth Warren and Mike Bloomberg – the two other hopefuls — were the big losers, winning only 36 and 12 delegates respectively.
To get the party nomination to face Trump, the winning Democratic candidate needs the support of 1991 delegates.
