A heart-wrenching case has come to light from Chaibasa area of West Singhbhum district of Jharkhand. Where a 50-year-old para-teacher was brutally murdered amid a dispute over drinking ‘Hadiya’ i.e. local rice beer.
According to the information, the deceased has been identified as Mukru Devgam, a para-teacher of Purnapani village. Due to the incident, tension has spread in the entire area and there is an atmosphere of panic among the villagers. As soon as the matter came to light, the police swung into action and started investigating the matter.
The chief informed the police
On Saturday, the Munda (head) of the village told the police that the body of a youth was lying in a suspicious condition near Purnapani Bazaar Tand of Tonto police station area. The villagers suspected that the young man had been murdered because injury marks were clearly visible on his body. As soon as the information was received, the police reached the spot, cordoned off the area and took the body into custody. In the preliminary investigation it became clear that the death was not normal but was the result of a violent attack.

Police identified the deceased
During investigation, the police identified the deceased as Mukru Devgam, who was working as a para-teacher in Purnapani village. As soon as the news of his death was received, there was mourning in the village. Villagers told that Devgam was a person of calm nature and was always at the forefront in teaching the children of the village. There was anger in the village due to his murder, while the police took the matter seriously and formed a special team for investigation.
SDPO Rafael Murmu will lead the team
Considering the sensitivity of the case, a special investigation team has been formed under the leadership of Sub-Divisional Police Officer (Jagannathpur) Rafael Murmu. This team was closely investigating the incident site and focusing on every angle. SDPO Murmu said that initial investigation had indicated that the accused had fled from the area after the incident and were hiding in the nearby forest. The police made their strategy based on this clue.
All three accused caught from the forest
Based on the input received during the investigation, the police team raided the nearby forest on Sunday. This operation continued for several hours, after which the police arrested the three accused residents of Purnapani village. Police say that the three accused were continuously hiding in the forest after the incident. After the arrest, the police brought all three to the police station and started strict interrogation.
The matter worsened after the dispute
During interrogation, the accused made shocking revelations. He told that he and the deceased Mukru Devgam were sitting together and drinking ‘Hadiya’. Meanwhile, the victim’s bowl filled with bones accidentally fell on the ground. An altercation started over this matter and within no time the matter escalated into a fight. The accused told that in anger they attacked Devgam with sticks and stones, due to which he died on the spot.
Accused sent to jail
After arresting the three accused, the police produced them in the court and sent them to jail. At the same time, the police is now also investigating whether any other person was involved in the incident or whether the dispute suddenly flared up and turned violent. SDPO Rafael Murmu has said that the investigation of the case is going on and after receiving the postmortem report, there will be clarity on many more points. This incident has once again exposed the seriousness of liquor related disputes in villages.
