Boat tourism will change the picture of Yamuna in Delhi! Responsible responsibilities assigned to these 5 government departments

On Tuesday, 5 agencies of the Government of India and the Delhi government signed a memorandum for boat tourism service in Yamuna. According to the MoU, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) will set up a cooperation between the Inland Waterways Authority of India, Delhi Development Authority, Delhi Jal Board, Irrigation and Flood Control Department, Delhi and Delhi Tourism and Transport Development Corporation Limited to develop boat tourism/Ferry Service in the identified part of the National Waterway-110 (Yamuna River) in Delhi.

Yamuna Boat Tourism Project

IWAI will develop inland water transport (IWT) at Delhi Stretch of Yamuna River. This includes the development of IWT in about 4 to 6 kilometers from Sonia Vihar to Jagatpur and the development of vessel berthing jetty, non-polluting boats, accessories and charging stations for boat tourism/boat service.

This will also help in increasing connectivity for the population living in the Yamuna river area. There will be non-polluting solar/electric hybrid boats with seating capacity of 20-30 passengers with 5-7 knots speed. The agencies have been entrusted with different responsibilities.

The role of Innland Water Authority of India (IWAI)

  • Providing infrastructure facilities including floating jetty and available design information for coastal development.
  • Passenger safety, fire fighting and emergency services.
  • Develop coastal feature, including the installation of a charging station for solar/electric hybrid boats.
  • No report, hydrographic survey and establishment of navigational AIDS.
  • Providing cooperation to apply the project in a smooth and effective manner, in which wherever necessary, take approval.
  • Giving technical help for river boat promotion.

Role of Delhi Development Authority (DDA)

  • Providing land for coastal facility by calling IWAI.
  • Connectivity for passengers/tourists.
  • Access to services like power supply.
  • As a land -owned agency, facilitates IWAI and agency for the smooth and effective execution of the project.
  • Ensuring drinking water facilities and toilets.

Delhi Jal Board (DJB) responsibilities

  • Guidelines and monitoring for water quality restrictions etc.
  • To manage the barrage in project stretch.
  • To solve any problem during boat operations.
  • Providing assistance and support to implement the project in an effective manner, including provision of drinking water supply and sewage line etc.
  • Other assistance required to fulfill the objective of the project.

The responsibilities of the Department of Irrigation and Flood Control

  • Maintenance of embankments.
  • To allow the use of spur approach road to access berthing facilities.
  • To determine that all security and emergency procedures have been told to the vessel operator and monitoring their compliance.
  • Assistance to apply the project correctly.
  • Other assistance required to fulfill the objective of the project.

Role of Delhi Tourism Department

  • Appoint an operator for purchase, operation and maintenance of solar/electric hybrid boats for the movement of passengers/tourists.
  • To maintain the vessel operator for boat operations.
  • Preparing charter of roles and responsibilities for vessel operators.
  • Following the rules and regulation of inland vessels under the inland vessel (IV) rules.
