The Union Cabinet on Friday approved 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas (KV) and 28 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV). Rs 8,231 crore has also been approved for perhaps the biggest expansion of Kendriya Vidyalayas in a decade. In this new expansion, Union Territory Jammu and Kashmir will get the maximum number of new KVs (13), while Arunachal Pradesh will get the maximum JNVs (8).

It is noteworthy that Central Schools are for the children of Central Government and Defense employees. On the other hand, JNVs are residential schools (from classes VI to XII) established in rural districts to nurture talented students from rural areas. At present, there are 1,256 functional KVs and 653 functional JNVs, apart from those approved recently by the Union Cabinet on Friday. Now 85 new Kendriya Vidyalayas will be established over a period of eight years starting from 2025-26, while 28 JNVs will be established over a period of five years from 2024-25 to 2028-29.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that PM Shri was brought to implement the new education policy. All Kendriya Vidyalayas and Navodaya Vidyalayas have been designated as PM Shri Schools to make them models. He said that with the opening of new Kendriya Vidyalayas, more than 82 thousand students across the country will get the opportunity to get affordable and high quality education. At present there are 1256 functional Kendriya Vidyalayas. Three of them are abroad. These include Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehran. 13.56 lakh students are studying in these schools.
