China virus deaths rise previous 900, surpassing SARS toll

With 91 more people dying in Hubei, the province at the centre of the break out, the toll is now greater than the 774 killed around the world by Extreme Severe Respiratory Syndrome (SARS).

The number of validated infections in China has reached 40,171 across the country with more than 3,000 new cases reported, the National Health Commission stated on February 10.

The newest data came after the WHO stated the last four days had actually seen “some stabilising” in Hubei, however cautioned the figures might still “shoot up”.

With much of the country still not back at work after a prolonged Lunar New Year holiday, cities including financial center Shanghai ordered residents to wear masks in public.

Michael Ryan, head of the WHO’s Health Emergencies Program, stated the “stable period” of the break out “may reflect the effect of the control procedures”.
