NEW DELHI: From making masks mandatory to restricting movement of people in areas identified as COVID-19 hotspots, India on Thursday beefed up surveillance and enforcement measures to contain the deadly virus outbreak. Meanwhile, worldwide policymakers are starting to discuss the challenge of re-opening economies, simultaneously battling a prospective recession and a second-wave of the Covid-19 pandemic.

NATION
- As per Union home ministry’s evening update on Wednesday, at least 169 people have died of Covid-19 in India with 5,865 total cases so far.
- Over the last 24 hours, 591 new cases and 20 deaths have been reported.
- The Centre has announced Rs 15,000 crore for ‘India COVID-19 Emergency Response and Health System Preparedness Package.’ The funds sanctioned will be utilised for immediate COVID-19 Emergency Response – Rs 7,774 crore and rest for medium-term support (1-4 years) to be provided under mission mode approach.
- Stating that no financial stimulus package has been announced to support industries during the lockdown, the Congress said as per the Assocham estimate the industry needed Rs 15-23 trillion support. The FICCI has put the figure at Rs 9-10 trillion.
- According to ICMR, India is in the final stages of finalising protocol for conducting clinical trial on convalescent plasma therapy.
- Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel on Thursday said that coronavirus came to India “through international flight” and the Centre should have ensured that all passengers coming to the country through such flights were quarantined.
