NEW DELHI: The 21-day nationwide lockdown meant to end in four days might see extension of sorts as chief ministers on Friday announced they will extend the curfew in their respective states to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. Meanwhile, the world completed 100 days since World Health Organisation was first notified about coronavirus.

NATION
- The death toll due to coronavirus rose to 206 and the number of cases in the country climbed to 6,761 on Friday, a record spike of 896 cases and 37 deaths in 24 hours since Thursday evening, according to the Union health ministry.
- Since March 23, Indian Railways has transported approximately 6.75 lakh wagons of commodities, including about 4.50 lakh wagons of essential commodities like food grains, salt, sugar, edible oil, coal and petroleum products, as per ministry statement.
- After Pakistan pledged to donate $3 million to SAARC COVID-19 Emergency Response Fund, India on Friday highlighted the “early commitment” made by other member countries and said the ‘degree of seriousness’ of each nation can be gauged by its behaviour.
- Hours after Punjab chief minister Amarinder Singh claimed that 58% of the country’s population is likely to get infected with coronavirus while quoting a PGIMER study, the premier medical and research institute on Friday evening said it was unaware of any such study by its department.
- Despite India reporting nearly 200 COVID-19 deaths in last one month, the country’s death rate of about 3 per cent is lower than the global rate.
- Union home minister Amit Shah on Thursday directed the Border Security Force (BSF) to enhance surveillance along the Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh borders and prevent, in coordination with the district authorities, any cross-border movement during the COVID-19 lockdown.
- India is set to begin shipping the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine starting next week to the United States.
