NEW DELHI: Indians are waiting in queues. While those in India are queuing to return to their native states, Indians stranded abroad are queuing up at airports to return back home. There are also queues outside liquor shops in India. Meanwhile, Centre and state governments are in overdrive to tackle the massive influx of travellers and screen for coronavirus infections.

NATION

  • Thirteen states/UTs, including Kerala, Odisha and J&K, have not reported any new case of Covid-19 in the last 24 hours, Union health minister Harsh Vardhan said on Thursday. He said 3,561 new cases have been reported and 1,084 patients have recovered in 24 hrs. The minister said that India is in a better state given 3.3% mortality rate and 28.83% recovery rate.
  • The Indian Railways on Thursday said it has run over 163 Shramik Special trains since May 1 and ferried home over 1.60 lakh migrants stranded in various parts of the country.
  • As many as 177 Indians on board a scheduled flight from Dubai will reach Kozhikode, which will be first of many flights part of a massive repatriation programme undertaken by the government.
  • Repatriation of Indian nationals from US will start from Saturday, said Indian Embassy in Washington.
  • Repatriation of Indian nationals from Singapore will start from Friday.
  • The Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) for admission to IITs will be conducted on August 23. It was scheduled for May 17 but was postponed to due to the lockdown.
  • A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court seeking direction to the AAP government to start online sale of liquor to ensure social distancing.
