In some areas of the country, rice is consumed more and in some areas, roti is consumed more. Most of the people of North India eat more rotis, although different types of rotis are also eaten here. People who suffer from gluten intolerance are often advised to eat less wheat or wheat products. Recently, a functional nutritionist, Ekansh Jaiswal, did a podcast with ortho surgeon Dr. Manu Bora in which it was discussed that eating roti can cause diabetes. Know what he claimed.
Ekansh said in the video, ‘Eating roti means inviting diabetes in your body. Roti is not a healthy option. It spikes insulin in the body. When you eat wheat, your blood sugar level increases rapidly. People think that they are eating less roti but roti does not allow the body to do so because no one stops after eating one roti and neither will you. Every person eats at least 3 to 4 rotis and things like dal, rice or ketchup are also added to it and this becomes dangerous for the person. We think that salty things do not contain sweets but for the body everything is in the form of sugar. Whether you eat bread or sweets. All things get converted into glucose in the body.
what do doctors say
Dr. Manu said, ‘The wheat grown in the times of our grandparents was natural, not mutated. It had more fiber content and was smaller. Today’s wheat has a high glycemic index and is refined, which increases inflammation in the body. If you reduce the swelling in your body, fat loss will happen automatically.
There is a common myth, ‘Eating bread causes diabetes.’ But it is not true. Bread in itself does not cause diabetes. The quantity, type of flour and what you eat it with makes a big difference. ‘Regular wheat breads made with refined or highly processed flour can cause a rapid rise in blood sugar levels, especially if eaten in large quantities or with less fiber and protein.’
‘The better way is to balance your plate. Eat plenty of vegetables, pulses and proteins like paneer, lentils or eggs with 1-2 rotis. Choose multigrain or high fiber flour (mix oats, gram or jowar flour). Diabetes is caused by insulin resistance, lack of activity and overall diet, not by any single food. So don’t blame the bread. Improve your lifestyle.
Ekansh tells that I have two recipes of my own for roti. Firstly, Almond Flour Roti does not cause inflammation at all and is best for diabetics, blood pressure or PCOS people. It contains both fiber and healthy fats. Apart from this, you can also eat Egg-Paneer Roti. For this, blend 2 eggs and 100 grams of cheese. Then make it like omelette or cheela. It contains both fat and protein. You will get about 10 grams of protein from just one roti.
Can bread really cause diabetes?
Celebrity nutritionist Dr Ryan Fernando had tweeted on social media, ‘Wheat bread itself does not cause diabetes but portion size, lifestyle and activity level are more important. You run into problems when people consume too many carbs and don’t add fiber or protein. If you are eating multigrain or millet roti and taking vegetables, pulses or protein along with it, then this roti will also be healthy.
Mumbai-based clinical dietitian Dr. Myra Singh says, ‘It is wrong to give up roti completely. Wheat also contains complex carbs, fiber and essential vitamins, but refined flour or overcooked rotis can increase blood sugar. Therefore, make rotis from flour without removing the bran.
