Donald Trump on Monday took oath as the 47th US president in a glittering ceremony in Washington DC. Immediately after, he launched a scathing attack on Mexico, announcing a national emergency on the US’s southern borders, and also promising to send troops to enforce the ‘stay in Mexico’ policy. Trump also announced measures to improve government efficiency and a foreign revenue department to collect taxes from his tariff plans. His inauguration saw jubilation among his supporters, who also booed former US presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama during the inauguration ceremony. In his first speech after the inauguration, Trump declared “the golden age of America begins”. He also announced changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico. His inauguration ceremony took place at noon (1700 GMT or 10.30 pm IST) inside the Rotunda of the US Capitol, four years after a mob of Trump supporters breached the symbol of American democracy in an unsuccessful effort to forestall Republican Trump’s 2020 defeat to Democrat Joe Biden. The swearing-in was moved indoors for the first time in 40 years due to the extreme cold.

Elon Musk’s ‘Doge’ sued soon after Trump’s swearing-in
Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (Doge) programme faced a lawsuit just minutes after Donald Trump’s inauguration. According to a 30-page lawsuit obtained by The Washington Post, the legality of the government advisory committee Trump claims to have created is being challenged because it allegedly violated federal transparency laws concerning disclosure, hiring, and other practices. The public interest law firm National Security Counsellors argues that Musk’s efficiency panel qualifies as a “federal advisory committee,” a legally regulated entity designed to provide transparent and balanced advice to the government. The lawsuit claims the panel lacks “fairly balanced” representation, fails to maintain meeting records, and does not comply with public scrutiny requirements mandated by law.

Republican Trump and outgoing Democratic President Joe Biden had earlier travelled by motorcade together to the Capitol, where the ceremony was being held indoors — and with a much smaller crowd — for the first time in decades due to frigid weather.

Elon Musk’s DOGE to be sued shortly after Trump inauguration
Elon Musk’s “Department of Government Efficiency” (Doge) program is expected to face a lawsuit shortly after Donald Trump’s inauguration.
The 30-page lawsuit, obtained by The Washington Post, contests the legality of the government advisory committee Trump plans to establish, claiming it breaches federal transparency laws regarding disclosure, hiring practices, and other procedures.
National Security Counsellors, an advocacy group focused on transparency in national security matters, argues that DOGE would violate a 1972 law mandating that advisory committees to the executive branch adhere to rules concerning disclosure and hiring.
Reports suggest that DOGE has already employed dozens of staff members working from Musk’s SpaceX offices in Washington, DC and often using the encrypted messaging app Signal for communication.

Trump leaves church for White House
Trump has left St. John’s Episcopal Church after a prayer service ahead of the inauguration. He and his wife, Melania, are next expected to be welcomed by President Joe Biden and first lady Jill Biden, where they will share tea and coffee at the White House.

Trump to sign executive order limiting federal gender recognition to male, female
Trump will sign an executive order declaring that the federal government would recognize only two genders: male and female, an incoming White House official said Monday.
The order undoes parts of one President Joe Biden signed on his first day in office four years ago. Trump’s order could restrict access to gender-affirming medical care and sports competitions for some transgender people. The official said only two sexes will be recognized on passports and visas.
The move is not a surprise. Trump criticised transgender and nonbinary rights in his campaign, airing one ad more than 15,000 times that proclaimed, “Kamala is for them/them. President Trump is for you.”
Key figures from Trump’s first term among attendees of indoor event
The lineup will include Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, who served as Trump’s press secretary, along with former aide Kellyanne Conway and Texas Rep. Ronny Jackson, who was Trump’s White House physician.
Former White House adviser Peter Navarro, who served prison time related to the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol and is returning to Trump’s administration as a senior counselor for trade and manufacturing, is also expected to give remarks.
Kash Patel, Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, and Trump’s “border czar” Tom Homan will also attend.
Trump to issue executive orders reshaping immigration policies
President Donald Trump is going to issue a series of orders aimed at remaking America’s immigration policies on his first day in office Monday — ending asylum access, sending troops to the southern border and ending birthright citizenship, an incoming White House official said.
It’s unclear how he would carry out some of his executive orders, including ending automatic citizenship for everyone born in the country, while others were expected to be immediately challenged in the courts. The official spoke on condition of anonymity in order to preview some of the orders expected later Monday.
Immigrant communities were bracing for the crackdown that Trump had been promising throughout his campaign and up through a rally Sunday just ahead of his inauguration.

“We are also open to dialogue with the new US administration on the Ukrainian conflict,” Putin said in televised remarks, congratulating the Republican on his upcoming inauguration.
“As for the settlement of the situation itself, I want to emphasise that its goal should not be a brief truce… but a lasting peace based on respect for the legitimate interests of all people,” he added.
“We will, of course, fight for the interests of Russia, for the interests of the Russian people.”
