Nepal’s sensitivity to earthquake

Nepal is one of the most seismic areas in the world, as it is located on the border of Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates. The Indian plate is continuously slipping to the north side under the Eurasian plate, which is called subduction. This process creates heavy pressure and stress in the Earth’s surface which not only causes frequent earthquakes, but is also responsible for the construction and upliftment of the Himalayan mountain range.

Nepal has a tragic history of seismic incidents, with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake in the most notable April 2015, in which about 9,000 people lost their lives.
