The departure of monsoon has started in the country. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced the withdrawal of monsoon from Western Rajasthan from today. This annual process marks the departure of monsoon and the beginning of cold season. The Meteorological Department announces the departure of monsoon in the country when rain stops in any area for at least five consecutive days. Apart from this, an anticyclone should form in the lower troposphere (850 hPa and below). At the same time, the amount of moisture should be visible in satellite water vapor imagery and tephrigram.

Countdown for departure of monsoon begins

Despite early withdrawal from West Rajasthan, the incoming low pressure system (LPS) may delay the departure of Monsoon from some areas of North and North-Western regions of India. Due to the effect of this LPS, monsoon is expected to stop for a few more days in these areas. However, IMD estimates that by the second week of October the monsoon will gradually start withdrawing from the entire country.

IMD's estimate

The failure of monsoon has significant impacts on various sectors including agriculture, water resources management and disaster preparedness. Farmers keep a close eye on these incidents especially while moving from Kharif season to Rabi crops. There are signs of departure of monsoon in the country, in which different rainfall patterns have been observed in different areas, which has affected both agricultural production and the level of reservoirs.
