Once again a Hindu temple has been targeted in Canada. This time anti-Hindu slogans have been written on a popular Hindu temple in Brampton, which has hurt the sentiments of the Indian community. Condemning the incident of vandalism at the Gauri Shankar Temple, the Consulate General of India in Toronto said that the incident of damage to the temple has hurt the sentiments of the Indian community in Canada.

On Tuesday, a statement was issued by the Consulate Office of India in Canada that the sentiments of the Hindu community in Canada have been hurt by this heinous incident of vandalism in the temple. We have expressed our concern about this matter to the Canadian administration. Hateful things against India have been written on the walls of this temple which is a symbol of Indian heritage.

The Canadian administration is currently investigating the incident. The vandalism of a Hindu temple in Brampton is not an isolated incident. Three such incidents have happened since last July. Last September, the Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a strongly worded statement saying that there has been a sharp increase in cases related to hatred against Indians and anti-India activities. The Government of India had requested for proper investigation of these incidents.

According to official statistics from the Government of Canada, between 2019 and 2021, hate crimes related to religion, sexual orientation and race have increased by 72 per cent in Canada. This has increased fear among minority communities, especially the Indian community.

Apart from Canada, the Indian community is incensed by the increasing attacks on Hindu temples in Australia and New Zealand as well.
