Due to the ongoing tension in the Middle East, there is a danger of energy crisis all over the world. In India too, raids have been intensified in every city to stop black marketing and illegal storage of gas cylinders. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has taken a big decision.

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a new and important order regarding domestic gas connections. According to this order, people who have piped natural gas (PNG) connection in their homes will no longer be able to have a simultaneous domestic LPG connection. This means that such consumers will have to surrender their LPG cylinder connections immediately.

The ministry has clarified that those who have PNG connections will not be able to get refill of LPG cylinders from government oil companies or their distributors. This step has been taken with the aim of making the domestic gas management and distribution system better organized and effective.

The government believes that keeping both PNG and LPG connections together leads to inequality in gas supply, abuses and unnecessary dual use of resources. Therefore, through this restriction, consumers are being forced to arrange gas from a single source, thereby ensuring transparency and savings in supply.

This order is especially for those consumers who already have PNG connection in their homes. For their convenience, the Ministry has asked them to surrender their domestic LPG connections as soon as possible, otherwise the supply of LPG cylinders to them will be stopped.

Gas crisis in India: reasons, government preparations and the way forward

Due to the Iran-Israel war in the Middle East, the Strait of Hormuz has been closed, due to which the supply of LPG and natural gas to India has been disrupted. India imports LPG in large quantities for its domestic needs, due to which the stock is depleting rapidly. In metropolitan cities like Delhi and Mumbai, long queues are forming for gas cylinders and many restaurants are closing due to shortage of gas. Although the supply of PNG and CNG is in good condition, their situation is also in crisis.

To reduce the concerns, the government has assured through Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri that priority is being given to domestic customers and they have adequate stock. The minister said that 70-80 percent of the industry is getting gas and the sources of imports have been shifted to other countries. Also, the rumors spreading about the fuel crisis were said to be baseless. Apart from this, the government has also increased the supply of kerosene under PDS to meet the needs of rural and BPL families.

The government has taken six major steps to deal with the crisis, including increasing LPG production from refineries, improving booking and supply systems, and curbing hoarding. The new ‘Natural Gas Supply Regulation Order 2026’ has also been implemented, under which coordination between refineries and GAIL has been enhanced for essential gas supply. Also, efforts are underway to increase the supply of LNG from countries like Algeria and Australia. A three-member monitoring panel has been constituted which will keep a close watch on the situation.

Due to gas shortage in the commercial sector, there has been a 20-30 percent decline in restaurant operations, but domestic consumers are being given priority.

The government has increased the quantity of kerosene under PDS as an alternative to LPG, which will be given especially to rural and BPL families. It has also been asked to increase the use of coal and biomass at the local level. Efforts to stop black marketing have also been intensified by increasing supervision.
