India was chosen as non-permanent member of the powerful United Nations Security Council for a two-year term on June 17, winning 184 votes in the 193- member General Assembly.
India will sit in the most powerful U.N. organ, for two years beginning on January 1, along with the 5 irreversible members China, France, Russia, the U.K. and the U.S. as well as non-permanent members Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam.

New Delhi’s candidature was unanimously endorsed by the 55- member Asia-Pacific grouping, including China and Pakistan, in June last year.
