BENGALURU: The lockdown in April and the imposition of a hefty additional tax on liquor in May had a huge impact on one of the state government’s biggest revenue sources — liquor sales.
The sale of liquor in state dropped by 33% to 100 lakh cases in the April-June quarter, compared to 152 lakh cases sold in the same period last year. Each case contains 8.5 litres of liquor. The fall in sales resulted in the state collecting Rs 3,846 crore in excise in the quarter, a drop of Rs 1,913 crore compared to the year-ago quarter.
