India and the U.S. have “nearly” settled a minimal trade deal, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal stated on July 21.
” … I think we have a fast trade offer, which has some of the pending matters built up over the last couple of years, which we need to get out of the way quickly. We are almost there,” Mr. Goyal said at a virtual conference arranged by the U.S.-India Company Council’s India Ideas Summit.” I believe another number of calls, and we need to have the ability to sort that out,” he said.

Mr. Goyal, who was speaking on a panel with Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera, also reiterated what both nations have declared previously– that the longer term plan is to work towards a detailed trade offer. As an intermediate action in between the impending minimal offer and the detailed offer, Mr. Goyal proposed a preferential trade arrangement with the United States that would cover 50 to 100 products and services.
