The Isak-Muivah faction of the extremist National Socialist Council of Nagaland, or NSCN (IM), has said that the “genuine taxes” it levies can not be equated with extortion.

The group, which calls itself the National Socialist Council of Nagalim, has been on ceasefire mode because July 1997.

In a statement provided on June 27, the NSCN (IM) made it clear that it had the “intrinsic right of any sovereign people and country” to collect taxes from individuals and commercial facilities.
