There have been many reports of tomato shortage in Pakistan, which is facing economic crisis, but have you heard about the shortage of tomatoes in any European country? These reports of tomato shortage have not come from a small European country like Luxembourg or San Marino, but from Britain.
These days there is a shortage of tomatoes in Britain. Tomato shelves are lying empty in the supermarket. People are asking their government by posting their pictures on social media that when will they get tomatoes. A user running a Twitter account named Tony P Radio Show posted on social media that the shelves of many super stores are lying empty. It seems to them that not only tomatoes but everything is getting over from the store.
Actually, a large number of tomatoes are supplied in Britain from Morocco and Spain. It has been raining heavily in Morocco for the last four weeks. At this time flood-like conditions have arisen there and it is also getting severe cold. Because of this, the vegetables and fruits supplied to Britain are not being supplied from there.
Apart from Morocco, things are also supplied from Spain in Britain. But there too the weather has created havoc at this time. Due to excessive cold in both the countries, the tomato crop has not ripened. Due to bad weather, things are not being supplied from Spain as well.
Andrew Opie, director at the British Retail Consortium, which represents UK supermarkets, said the weather had worsened the situation in southern Europe and northern Africa. Therefore, apart from tomatoes, the supply of some other fruits is currently disrupted. Andrew further said that the supermarket is constantly talking to the farmers. He is hopeful that soon everything will be accessible to the people.
