Trump sidelined India? Questions raised by US’s new security policy

Since the beginning of Donald Trump’s second term as President, a major change seems to be taking place in India-America relations. There was also bitterness between the two countries due to the tariff. Now America has made it clear how it is going to maintain relations with India.

India’s position has changed in America’s new National Security Strategy 2025. Earlier, America considered India as a strong democratic partner against China, but now in the new strategy of President Donald Trump, India is being seen only as a practical and transactional ally.

India’s name appears only four times in the entire document and every time its context is related to utility. America is now linking trade with India to security contribution in the Indo-Pacific region. This means that now relationships are being based not on trust and shared values, but on conditions and benefits. This can be called strategic recruitment instead of strategic friendship.

During the Biden government, India’s development was seen in the interest of America and there was talk of a long partnership between the two countries. But it is clear from the new strategy of 2025 that America’s priorities have changed.

Experts say that America now considers India as a very independent and connected country, which does not fit into any one camp.

Trump’s thinking is clearly visible in this strategy. America is now distancing itself from global responsibilities and focusing more on its Western Hemisphere, border security, immigration control and domestic economy. The Indo-Pacific is still important, but it is no longer the center of American policy. Partner countries are being expected to take more responsibility themselves.

This situation is challenging for India. US pressure may increase on issues like trade, defense procurement and strategic independence. There are also indications in the immigration policy that opportunities for Indian skilled professionals may be limited.

Also, the US strategy’s silence on India’s border disputes with China suggests that America wants to stay away from conflicts that do not directly affect it.

This strategy does not reflect hostility towards India, but emotional distance. Now the challenge before India is that it should not compromise on its independence and balanced foreign policy while maintaining its utility. India will now have to formulate a strategy that can strike a balance between American expectations and its national interests.
