1. Weather condition in Delhi-NCR
Fast dust storm: At around 8 pm on Wednesday evening, strong winds were in Delhi-NCR, whose speed reached 79 km per hour (Safdarjung) and 74 km per hour (Patpam Ganj). Large dust bubbers were seen in areas like Yamuna Vihar, Bhajanpura and Gokalpuri in East Delhi, which reduced visibility.
Heavy rain and hailstorm: Heavy rains started after the storm. Hail also fell in areas like Lodi Road and Gol Market. In Noida and Ghaziabad, rain and hail filled the roads with water.
Trouble with relief: This season gave relief from the heat, but also brought many problems. The trees were uprooted, the roads were flooded, traffic jams and metro services were affected. Several flights at Delhi Airport were delayed or canceled.

2. What was the reason for the change of this season?
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the following reasons were behind this sudden weather change …
Cyclonic Circulation: There was a cyclonic movement in Haryana and surrounding areas, which was in an east-west trough (low pressure area) extending from Punjab to Bangladesh. This became the main reason for destabilizing the weather.
Moisture from the Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal: This cyclonic movement pulled moisture from the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal. This moisture promoted rain, hailstorm and strong winds.
Strong winds and instability: The mixture of moisture and hot air caused instability in the atmosphere, causing strong winds, dust storm, thunder and rain.
In view of this season, IMD issued a red alert for Delhi-NCR, in which people were advised to stay at home and take precautions.

3. How did the heat and moisture worse the situation?
“Feels like” temperature: The temperature in Delhi was 40.7 degrees Celsius a day, but due to high moisture (34% to 64%) it felt like 50.2 ° C. It is called “heat index” or “feels like” temperature, which mixes temperature and moisture and tells how hot the weather looks.
Weight bulb temperature: Due to excess moisture, the body’s sweat does not dry up, due to which the body does not cool. This is called “weight bulb temperature”. It was around 31-32 ° C in Delhi, which is dangerous levels. If it reaches 35 ° C, it can be fatal to stay out for several hours.
Effect on health: Excess heat and moisture increase problems like heat stroke, dehydration and fatigue, especially for children, elderly and sick people.

- Flights affected: Several flights at Delhi Airport were delayed or canceled. Indigo and Air India advised passengers to check their flight status.
- Power cuts: In some areas, electric poles fell due to strong winds, causing the power to collapse.
5. Was this weather normal or unusual?
The month of May is known for both heat and thunderstorms in Delhi. The air increases moisture due to heat, and when a cyclonic movement or low pressure is formed, thunderstorms, rain and hailstorm are common. But the storm and rain of May 21 were unusually acute, as the winds were very high (up to 79 kilometers per hour). The dust of dust almost reduced visibility. Rain and hailstorm created a sudden flood -like situation in many areas.
6. What is expected in future?
According to the IMD, by the end of June in Delhi, when the monsoon comes, the heat and moisture will remain. Rain may reduce the temperature slightly, but due to moisture, there will be a feeling of heat. On Thursday (May 22), the maximum temperature is expected to be 40 degrees and the minimum is 29 degrees Celsius.

- drink water: Drink plenty of water to avoid heat and moisture and wear light clothes.
- be in good shape: If you see symptoms of heat stroke (headache, dizziness, vomiting), contact the doctor immediately.
