Droukdel passed away in a joint operation by France and partner forces, the French federal government says.
Defence Minister Florence Parly stated Droukdel along with members of his inner circle had been killed in the north of the nation on Wednesday.
The recorded Islamic State group commander, Mohamed Mrabat, was a veteran jihadist and had a senior function in the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (ISGS) group, Ms Parly said.
