All the Different Ways King Viserys Could Die in House of the Dragon

If you’re the king in Westeros, someone will kill you and take your place. It’s inevitable! Yet, people still commit horrendous acts of violence just to sit on the Iron Throne. The looming threat of death often drives those in power into a paranoid panic, but King Viserys seems a little too mellow. So far House of the Dragon, he has a succession problem on his hands. The realm is wide open for a takeover, and he’s spending his time whittling a miniature model of the city in his room.

Let’s not kid ourselves—this guy is going to die. The only questions that remain are how and when. It could be the very next episode, or his demise could be drawn out over the course of four seasons—but it will happen. When it does? It’ll send the realm into absolute chaos. Let’s play detective and look at the clues given to us so far. If fans could figure out the “R + L = J” theory from Game of Thrones, this should be child’s play.

Stabbed By Aegon’s Knife

In the debut episode, Viserys shows his daughter, Rhaenyra, a decorative knife he keeps in his room that once belonged to Aegon the Conqueror. He tells her that it is made of Valyrian steel—one of the most precious materials in the realm—and that Aegon prophesied a day in the future when it would become very useful. Thrones fans will undoubtedly recognize the weapon as both the catalyst for the entire series and the tool used to finish off the Night King near the finale. So, there’s an incredibly important knife just sitting in the king’s chambers? No reason that it couldn’t kickstart the events of House of the Dragon as well!

Tetanus from the Iron Throne! After Viserys orders his younger brother, Prince Daemon, to leave King’s Landing, he cuts his finger on the Iron Throne. The chair is, after all, entirely made of pointy swords. As silly as it may seem for Viserys to get tetanus from that rusty metal chair, it’s also entirely plausible. There’s no Tetanus vaccine in Westeros circa 129 AC.

A Dragon Burns King Viserys to DeathThere’s a cool new murder weapon in Westeros. The realm is plentiful with dragons, and they’re all owned by the Targaryen family. Viserys is the current patriarch, but we have yet to see his dragon. We’ve spotted Caraxes, however, the massive red dragon owned by his brother, Prince Daemon. Burning your brother alive with dragon fire to take the throne would be pretty savage, but I wouldn’t put it past Daemon. The man lives for drama!

Why Not Poison?House of the Dragon currently has Princess Rhaenyra on wine-pouring duty during the king’s council meetings. She moves around the table, pouring everyone a cup, eavesdropping, and sharing her opinions as the heir to the throne. While I doubt that the young princess would plot to kill her own father, I could envision a diabolical scheme to knock out two birds with one stone. If someone could poison the king’s wine and have Rhaenyra pour it for him, they may be able to kill Viserys and blame his heir for his death at the same time. Evil! Of course, there are also countless other ways he could die. Let’s not forget that there’s a mysterious, nasty wound festering on his back, too!
