‘Ambush attack’ on love rival ends in life sentence for murderer amid angry court outbursts

A convicted murderer who claimed he was the victim of a “corrupt” WA justice system has been sentenced to life in jail with a minimum term of almost 20 years for fatally stabbing his former love rival.

Daniel James Carrington, 43, was found guilty by a Supreme Court jury of murdering Ben Egan in what was described as “an ambush attack” at the Foundation Housing building in Northbridge in April 2016.

Mr Egan, 38, was stabbed at least seven times, including five wounds to the chest.

The attack was partially captured by CCTV cameras, with the footage showing Carrington fleeing the scene.

It took three years for Carrington’s case to proceed through the courts and he repeatedly sacked lawyers appointed to represent him both before and after his murder conviction.

He ultimately represented himself and, in angry outbursts during his sentencing hearings, he accused Justice Michael Corboy of “coordinating efforts” against him.  

“You’re corrupt, so’s this court, that’s all I’ve got to say,” he said.
