Scott Charles Henry Cameron, 37, of Ballarat, has pleaded guilty to murdering Ms Goodsell.
The pair had been in a relationship for just three months, the court heard.
A plea hearing underway in the Supreme Court heard Cameron controlled and terrified Ms Goodsell in the days before he killed her.
The court was told Ms Goodsell died of “incised injuries to the neck” after she was slashed 55 times across her face, neck and scalp.
There were also injuries to her hands and arms where she tried to defend herself, prosecutors told Justice Andrew Tinney.
Ms Goodsell and a friend exchanged text messages two nights earlier, after Ms Goodsell threatened to leave Cameron.
“I’m not allowed anywhere. He bent my phone into a banana yesterday,” Ms Goodsell texted to her friend, according to the prosecution summary.
