Coronavirus leads Ohio to postpone election in spite of judge’s refusal

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Ohio will delay its presidential nominating election prepared for Tuesday, in spite of a judge’s rejection to back a postponement, due to the fact that the general public health emergency situation caused by the coronavirus makes it too hazardous, Governor Mike DeWine said.

DeWine had asked a state court for permission to hold off the election, however after a judge rejected the request he said the state’s health director would order the polls shut as part of the general public health emergency caused by the virus.

” Throughout this time when we face an unprecedented public health crisis, to perform an election tomorrow would force poll workers and citizens to put themselves at an inappropriate health danger of contracting coronavirus,” DeWine stated on Twitter Monday night.

While he had first sought the approval of the courts to move the election, judge Richard Frye rejected the demand to hold off the primary on Tuesday regardless of growing issues about the coronavirus that have shut down schools, restaurants and large events across the nation.

On Tuesday, Ohio Department of Health Director Amy Acton would buy the surveys closed, DeWine said, while Secretary of State Frank LaRose appealed Frye’s choice.

The process of the appeal started Monday night, Ohio Department of Health spokeswoman Melanie Amato stated, as Florida, Arizona and Illinois prepare to vote on Tuesday.
