The DA states it is considering its alternatives after the ANC obstructed transfer to examine the irregular hiking of secretary to parliament Xolile George’s income by 70% soon after he was selected. The DA stated the ANC battled on Wednesday to secure previous speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the consultation of George. It stated the ANC argued that the powers and opportunities committee did not have the jurisdiction to continue with an examination, because Mapisa-Nqakula was no longer an MP. “We remain in the procedure of thinking about alternatives in regards to the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act, the Financial Management of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act, and the assembly guidelines to take this examination forward,” DA deputy primary whip Annelie Lotriet stated. The DA invited the suggestion that Mapisa-Nqakula be examined for contempt of parliament for apparently irregularly treking George’s wage quickly after his visit. The charges sent by the primary whip of the opposition, Siviwe Gwarube, were at first described the committee by the deputy speaker of the National Assembly, Lechesa Tsenoli, on November 3. On February 22, the committee sent out a letter to Mapisa-Nqakula, who needed to send her action by March 4. After thinking about Mapisa-Nqakula’s reaction, the initiator selected by the committee, Karrisha Pillay SC, discovered on March 25 that there was a prima facie case that called for the committee’s examination and a subsequent hearing. “The truth that Ms Mapisa-Nqakula resigned before she might be held liable neither discharges her– and by extension the executive authority of parliament– nor does it get to the bottom of the supposed irregular hiking of Mr George’s wage.” She stated George was still acting as the secretary to parliament, and the executive authority need to be held responsible. She stated Pillay’s finding validated what the DA had actually long held, that the previous speaker misinformed MPs when she caused them to back George for visit to the position at a much lower wage plan than he was making in his previous task. The fairly low wage potentially left out more certified prospects from getting the task. TimesLIVE
