In a disturbing scenario highlighting the horrendous toll of COVID-19, the Federal Emergency Management Firm is sending refrigerated trucks to New York City City to hold the bodies of illness victims as morgues struggle to keep up.
The approximated 85 trucks will act as interim mortuaries, parked on the streets outside medical facilities. Some trucks are already in location, though it’s uncertain if they have been supplied by FEMA.
There is a “desperate need” for morgue area in Queens in specific, stated Von Essen, a former New York City Fire Department commissioner who was in office during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
” We are going to have a horrible lot of folks that aren’t going to make it,” Von Essen warned. It’s a “difficult, tough battle we have in front of us.”
The Department of Defense Mortuary Affairs will likewise send 42 staff members to assist in the Manhattan Medical Examiner’s Office.
