The burghers of Brighton were outraged a year ago when Premier Jacinta Allan came to the heart of their well-shaded suburb and announced plans to change the planning laws to allow high-rise apartment buildings to tower over Church Street.
On Wednesday, Allan will make good on her word with the release of draft maps showing the proposed development boundaries and height limits for this boulevard of Bayside dreams and neighbouring sand belt suburbs.
They provide the first opportunity for residents to see the proposed height limits street by street in areas earmarked for higher-density housing development.
The maps for the first 25 of 50 “train and tram zone activity centres” – middle-ring suburbs selected because of their proximity to existing transports links – show that residential towers up to 16 storeys high will be permitted on Hampton Street, Hampton, the Eaton Mall in Oakleigh, Burwood Road in Hawthorn and Auburn and High Street at Kew Junction.
Towers up to 12 storeys high have been slated for Brighton’s Church Street, Bay Street in North Brighton and Bay Road in Sandringham. The same height limit is proposed next to train stations in Hughesdale and Glenferrie.
