Hong Kong’s leader says security laws will not impact city’s rights and liberties

HONG KONG (Reuters) – Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam said on Tuesday that Beijing’s suggested nationwide security laws would not trample on the city’s rights and flexibilities and contacted residents to wait to see the information of the legislation.

Lam added her voice to an unmatched barrage of declarations by Beijing and local officials, and previous city leaders protecting the legislation and seeking to assure residents, investors and diplomats about Hong Kong freedoms.

” There is no need for us to fret,” Lam told a regular weekly news conference.

Like others supporting the legislation, she did not explain how the freedoms that Hong Kong takes pleasure in will be upheld.

” In the last 23 years, whenever people worried about Hong Kong’s liberty of speech and liberty of expression and demonstration, time and once again, Hong Kong has proven that we support and maintain those values,” she said.

” The very best thing is to see the legislation in front of us and to understand why at this point in time Hong Kong requires this piece of legislation.”
