New coronavirus case recorded in the NT

A US marine has tested positive to coronavirus in Darwin.

NT Health Minister Natasha Fyles said the marine arrived in Darwin a “few days ago” on a charter flight.

She said the marine had had “very very minimal contact” with any civilians, having travelled through the military side of Darwin airport to the Robertson Barracks.

The marine is being been transferred to Royal Darwin Hospital.

There are now two active coronavirus cases in the NT.

Football and netball comps canned

Victoria’s major metropolitan football and netball leagues have confirmed all competitions will be cancelled this year because of the new stay-at-home restrictions imposed by the Victorian Government this week.

In a statement, the leagues said the common view was that cancelling all competitions was the “only viable decision” in the best interests of the clubs, the participants and the wider community.

“All leagues and their member clubs have a clear obligation to prioritise the health and safety of all participants and their families during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as a duty to minimise the burden on all club volunteers during this unprecedented time,” the statement said.

The move affects the Essendon District Football League, the Eastern Football and Netball League, the Northern Football Netball League, South East Juniors and Western Region Football League.

The Yarra Junior Football League, the biggest junior football competition, has previously said its competition was only postponed and it would make a decision on whether to play on at a later date.

Second round of $750 payments are coming

I’m seeing a lot of talk about the second round of $750 payments in the comments section.

That’s the Economic Support Payment (ESP), which is due to be paid out to eligible people from July 13.

Here’s the advice on that one from Services Australia:

You won’t get the second ESP if you’re getting the Coronavirus Supplement, even if you got the first one.

If you’re eligible, we’ll pay it straight into your bank account. You don’t need to do anything.

A focus on the CBD and night time economy

Victoria’s Industry and Tourism Minister Martin Pakula said businesses in Melbourne’s CBD were had hit by the pandemic.

He said the payments of $5,000 offered to businesses in locked down suburbs would be extended to any business in areas subjected to the new lockdown order.

Here’s what else he said:

“In terms of the night time economy, there were a number of businesses who did not benefit from the initial tranche of support, given the size of their payroll.

“So some of those large restaurants, pubs and hospitality venues will be supported under this $30 million fund for the night time economy.

And, in terms of the CBD support, I had a conversation this morning with the Lord mayor.

“The fact is that the CBD has been, in some respects, uniquely hit by the fact that stay-at-home directives have particularly kept people away from the CBD

“The absence of foot traffic in the CBD has meant that many of the businesses in the city and Docklands and Southbank have been particularly affected by the restrictions that have been imposed on Victorians.”
