What we know so far By Jessica McSweeney and Farrah Tomazin At least 15 people died and 35 were injured when a man rammed his truck at high speed into a New Orleans crowd before opening fire in what the FBI are investigating as an act of terrorism.

Here is what we know so far:

The FBI has identified 42-year-old Shamsud-Din Jabbar, a US citizen and military veteran, as the alleged attacker. Authorities allege Jabbar deliberately rammed his truck into crowds at the famous French Quarter near Bourbon Street, mounting the footpath at times to mow down pedestrians. The attack took place after 3am when partygoers were ringing in the new year. An ISIS flag was located in the truck, and police believe he was not acting alone. Jabbar died shortly after the attack when he engaged in a shoot-out with police. Two officers were injured. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he could,” Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick said at a press conference soon after the incident. “He was hell-bent on creating the carnage and the damage that he did.”
