Rahm eyes victory at Mexico Open

Jon Rahm has continued his march toward a seventh PGA Tour victory, firing a three-under 68 third round to retain his two-stroke lead at the Mexico Open in Vallarta, Mexico.

World No.2 Rahm, whose last victory was the US Open at Torrey Pines last summer, carded four birdies against one bogey on Saturday to sit at 15-under 198.

The Spaniard leads from Cameron Champ (67) and Kurt Kitayama (66), who are tied for second with Davis Riley (67), Patrick Rodgers (66) and Nate Lashley (64) a further shot back.

It will be the seventh time Rahm has at least a share of the lead going into the final round.

He has only converted one of the previous six chances on the PGA Tour, though that doesn’t include his withdrawal from the Memorial last year when he had a six-shot lead and couldn’t play the final round because of a positive COVID-19 test result.

This figures to be a little tougher with only at two-shot margin, and with five players within three shots of the lead.

“I played really good golf. Tee to green was really, really good,” Rahm said.

“That one (putt) on 18 was the first one outside 10 feet I saw roll in.

“If I can just keep that going and make putts like I did the first two days, I think tomorrow I’ll give myself a really good chance.”

Lashley came out smoking, carding three birdies and an eagle on the front nine. He also ended with consecutive birdies for his bogey-free round.

“I hit the ball nice, made some nice putts early,” Lashley said. “It’s a great day out here, the weather. The wind’s not blowing that hard, so it’s scorable right now and I just took advantage of it, so hopefully going into tomorrow I can continue to play well.”
