Sam Kerr makes mad dash home to see hospitalised grandmother

Matildas superstar Sam Kerr was in no mood to speak to reporters when she landed in Perth on Saturday.

Kerr and her father Roger had been in the Hunter Valley on Friday, attending the wedding of Kerr’s Australian teammate Emily van Egmond.

But while they were in the Hunter, Roger’s 89-year-old mother, Coral Kerr, was allegedly hit by a car at around 10.45am (local time) Friday morning.

“I don’t really know,” Roger Kerr said.

“I’ve just come from the Hunter Valley from a wedding …,” he said.

The appearance of the troubled Daniel Kerr was a surprise.

The former AFL star has had a troubled past, and was sentenced to two years in jail for attempting to set his parents’ house on fire in 2021.

He had been out of favour with the family and did not speak to Sam for years, but it appears that rift is over.

Coral Kerr was allegedly hit by the vehicle after she got off the bus.

It is understood she was just metres from her Palmyra home when the incident unfolded.

A 63-year-old Willagee man has been charged with one count of dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm.

He will appear before Fremantle Magistrates Court on February 4.

Neighbours allege the man had tried to overtake the stopped bus in a white Great Wall ute near the intersection of Marmion and Justinian streets when the incident happened.

It has been alleged he pulled up on the footpath.

A Royal Perth Hospital spokesman said Coral Kerr had improved and was in a stable condition.

Coral and her husband moved from India to Australia more than 50 years ago.

She has previously spoken about her relationship with Sam, calling it “fantastic”.

“Nearly every week, she sends me a message, I phone her. I FaceTime with her,” she said.

“Whenever she comes home, she’s always here having breakfast.

“Her favourite breakfast is a pirrata, which is an Indian bread with jam. Or we go out for a coffee or lunch. She never fails to come and see me and take me out.”
