After an ugly 4-1 loss to the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, the Senators needed their players to step up against the Carolina Hurricanes, especially with the possibility of facing them in Round 1 of the National Hockey League playoffs.

Captain Brady Tkachuk scored twice, while top centres Tim Stutzle, Dylan Cozens and Shane Pinto delivered with goals in Ottawa’s huge 6-3 victory over the Hurricanes in front of 16,857 at the Canadian Tire Centre.

Stutzle played only sparingly late in the game and was getting his shoulder area worked on by athletic therapist Dom Nicoletta on the bench. Stutzle wasn’t available to speak to the media because he was in treatment, but coach Travis Green stated he’ll be fine.

The Senators had to take advantage of a Carolina club that played on Saturday night at home, especially with backup goaltender Frederik Andersen making the start in this one.

“We wanted a response from yesterday,” said winger Ridly Greig. “The team showed up tonight with a full 60 minutes.”

Helped by a 25-save effort from top goaltender Linus Ullmark, the Senators stayed in the final wildcard spot in the East. Claude Giroux also scored into an empty net to help ensure the victory.

With only five games left, Ottawa can’t rest on its laurels because there is still plenty of work to be done to make the National Hockey League playoffs for the second straight spring.

The Senators have to keep an eye on the out-of-town scoreboard, but if they keep winning, then they control their own destiny. They were sitting in the final wildcard spot in the East.

The Canes are home and cooled with a playoff spot locked up. They opted to sit Jordan Staal and Jordan Martinook for this one, but this game had a playoff atmosphere from start to finish.

The Senators were 0-2-0 against the Hurricanes this season, but the club had a strong effort in this one.
