Sutak and Patak Kaal: The first lunar eclipse of the year is going to occur on March 3. This lunar eclipse will be visible in many parts of India. Whenever an eclipse is visible in India, a few hours before it, Sutak period comes into force, in which auspicious works and religious rituals are considered prohibited. Sutak begins 12 hours before the solar eclipse and 9 hours before the lunar eclipse. Even gods and goddesses are not worshiped during this period. But do you know that like Sutak, there is also Patak. Like Sutak, some strict rules apply in Patak also. Let us understand the difference between them.

According to the scriptures, apart from lunar eclipse or solar eclipse, Sutak and Patak also have a deep connection with birth and death. It is believed that both these conditions have a big impact on human life.

What is Sutak?
Sutak is associated with eclipses and impurities created at the time of birth. After the birth of a child, Sutak is imposed on the family, during which parents and relatives stay away from religious functions and rituals. It is also considered prohibited for the mother of the newborn to go to the kitchen till the worship of Chhathi. During the Sutak of eclipse, temples remain closed and worship is not done.

What is Patak?
Description of Patak is found in Garuda Purana. It is believed that Patak is observed immediately after the death of a family member. During this period, the family members have to follow special rules for about 12 or 13 days. During this period, one should avoid cooking at home or going to the kitchen. Also, auspicious works are avoided in this. Worship is prohibited.

Why does it feel like a paatak?
Patak is imposed due to the impurities created after death. Although its total duration is considered to be about one and a half months, but it is strictly followed for the first 13 days. It is considered to end only after the last rites, immersion of ashes, bathing in the holy river and Brahmin food.

When does Patak apply?
Apart from the death of a person in the family, there is a tradition of following the rules of Patak even in case of miscarriage or death of a pet. Its duration and rules are decided according to different circumstances.

Time and sutak of lunar eclipse of March 3
According to Indian time, the eclipse will start at 3:20 pm on March 3 and will end at 6:46 pm. The duration of the first lunar eclipse of this year will be 3 hours 27 minutes. Sutak starts 9 hours before the lunar eclipse. On this basis, Sutak period will become effective from 6.20 am on March 3. And the Sutak will end with the eclipse period.
